Artists

In our cultural exchanges internationally we wish to share our interpretations, our ideas, and our skills as artists, and receive those of our fellow artists working in other countries. And then to discuss them. We see this as something of value in itself. This has been the mainspring of our partnership with the Sanshang Contemporary Art Museum, CAA. The idea is to let the artists speak for themselves.  As each book is opened and viewed we meet an individual voice.  As with the images, so with the text pages;  it is the words of the artists themselves that we read. In the messy business of making an artwork, materials and their qualities are central to an artist's whole practice. Whichever culture we grow up in we become carriers of long traditions which we explore and challenge.

The way new artists are selected is fluid and flexible and varies for each new country and venue. We invite new partner institutions to participate in this process. Sometimes they make the selection from their own national artists, sometimes they ask us to do so. We also add new artists from Wales to join us from time to time, to keep the display fresh. This is always through suggestions from existing participants in keeping with the original informality of the project. Our Chinese colleagues likewise continue to add or substitute books from time to time.

'Artists featured in this exhibition, who are from diverse cultural backgrounds and artistic traditions, offer us an opportunity to examine the possibilities of a cross-cultural dialogue that we hope would begin from locating common ground' Zhijian Qian. Literati Issues concerning a dialogue between Albums and Artists Books 2017.
